Welcome to Our Pediatric Dentistry Blog!

Amarillo Kids Dentist, Dr. Billy Metcalf and his friendly and professional staff would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our new pediatric dentistry blog. We encourage your comments and participation. Do not hesitate to join the conversation!

Our top priority is to help your child achieve and maintain a beautiful and healthy smile. We offer a very caring and gentle environment designed to put your child at ease while he/she is under our care. One of our goals is that your child learns the importance of good dental hygiene. Therefore Dr. Metcalf and his staff will strive to provide you with the knowledge and treatment necessary to maintain your child's healthy smile. We are conveniently located at 4501 Van Winkle Dr. Amarillo, Texas.

This blog will be used to help you to teach your child the importance of practicing good oral hygiene at home and while in school. If your child is under the age of three, you should clean his or her teeth with a pea size amount of fluoridated toothpaste and a soft bristle brush. Although children can be independent after the age of four, it is important as a parent to still brush your child's teeth and then allow your child to follow up behind you. Most of the time, children under the age of six do not have the manual dexterity to thoroughly brush their own teeth without help or direct supervision of a parent. Tooth decay is the most common, chronic childhood disease in the United States so we cannot stress the importance of proper brushing and flossing enough.

It is best to bring your child into our office for his/her first visit early. The Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends bringing in your child at around one year of age, as this is when first teeth begin to appear. However, Dr. Metcalf generally recommends around the age of three unless you as a parent see something that you have concerns about. Making use of preventative dentistry techniques and having a proper understanding of diet can help to stop many problems before they get the chance to develop. Kids by nature tend to be rather lax when it comes to oral hygiene so we will use this blog to offer some suggestions you can utilize to make oral care more pleasant and even fun for your child.

As your child grows older, regular visits to our office will naturally encourage an awareness of proper dental hygiene and care. Your child will also learn about the natural connection between diet and the formation of cavities as well as learn about ways to prevent injury to the teeth. Nothing is more important to you than your child's precious smile and it is therefore important to give it the correct start in life.

Our Amarillo dental staff strives to make your child feel at home here in our office. We provide a very positive and fun-loving approach to each patient we serve. Every member of our treatment team is a registered assistant and our office staff has many years of combined experience in treating patients with the best care possible.

We will offer you the latest dental technology news as well as share exciting and useful information regarding all aspects of pediatric dentistry. Caring for teeth is our passion and we hope to establish a great and long-lasting relationship with both you and your child.
