The Beginnings of a Beautiful Smile

As a pediatric dentistry practice, our main goal at Children’s Dentistry of Amarillo is to ensure the oral and dental health of your child. Therefore, we seize every opportunity to provide you with the most current information on how to maintain your child's beautiful smile from early on in life.

Brushing & Flossing

One of the main areas we like to emphasize is the importance of practicing good oral hygiene at home and while in school.

At a glance, if your child is under the age of three, you should clean his or her teeth with a pea size amount of fluoride toothpaste and a soft bristle brush twice a day. Although children can be independent brushers by the age of four, our pediatric dentist recommends you still brush your child’s teeth and then allow your child to follow up behind you.

Most of the time children under the age of six do not have the manual dexterity to thoroughly brush their own teeth without help or direct supervision of a parent. As such, given that tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States, our kids dentistry professionals stress the importance of parents actively monitoring their children’s brushing and flossing habits.

Early Treatment

Another area that our pediatric dentistry practice likes to highlight is the importance of early treatment. It is best to bring your child to our Amarillo, TX office for his/her first visit early on. Dr. Metcalf generally recommends scheduling an initial appointment around the age of three, unless you as a parent have concerns before then.

Regular Visits to Our Amarillo, TX Office

As your child grows older, regular visits to our Amarillo pediatric dentistry practice will encourage an awareness of proper dental hygiene and care. Your child will also learn about the natural connection between diet and the formation of cavities, and about how to prevent injuries to teeth.
