Happy National Children’s Dental Health Month

The team at your local Amarillo pediatric dentistry practice would like to wish all our patients and their families a happy National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM)! Every year during the month of February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors this important celebration to raise awareness of how important oral health is for kids.

We all know how vital it is to take good care of our children’s teeth, and to teach them how to keep their smiles healthy and beautiful. But most parents are very familiar with trying to convince a toddler to brush their teeth for the recommended two minutes, as it’s difficult to engage young children to take care of their oral hygiene. Some parents even wonder if it’s worth all the fuss to care for teeth that will eventually come out and be replaced with permanent teeth. But those primary teeth are very important and they must be cared for. If a child were to lose their primary teeth early, the permanent teeth could come in crooked or otherwise compromised.

Making Dental Care Enjoyable

Children can get excited about brushing their teeth if they understand the reasons why they should take care of their teeth. But instead of trying to carefully explain why, which often doesn’t work with young kids, it’s best to show them the importance of good oral care by using visual aids. The ADA has lots of free dental care aids that parents can use to get their kids interested in proper dental care like puzzles, games and activity sheets. You can look through some of this information here.

Your Amarillo pediatric dentist, Dr. Metcalf and his team will be observing NCDHM by speaking to our patients about how important it is to take good care of their teeth. We will also be encouraging parents to help make oral hygiene fun at home by offering some brushing and flossing tips.

Don’t Forget Those Checkups!

In observance of NCDHM, we would like to remind parents that it’s just as important for children to visit their kids dentist regularly as it is to practice good oral hygiene. At these important dental visits that should take place approximately every six months, Dr. Metcalf will look for any problems that may be developing with the teeth and gums and provide the necessary treatment if a problem is detected so it doesn’t become more complex. We will also clean your child’s teeth to keep them looking beautiful and healthy.
